  32. ATI Video Cards
  33. You will get a General Protection Fault (GPF) error. To fix this, please
  34. contact ATI tech support at (905) 882 - 2600 and ask for the proper settings
  35. for your video card model to enable play back of the QuickTime for Windows
  36. movie file format.  
  37.  
  38. IBM Aptiva and PS1
  39. 1. Control - F1 during boot up - This will launch configuation utility.
  40. 2. Go to third page.
  41. 3. Disable APM Bios.

  63. Packard Bell Users:
  64. Problem: distorted and broken video display
  65. Solution: Packard Bell technicians strongly recommend at least 1 meg
  66. of video memory in addition to an SVGA moniter for this Digital
  67. Playground product to function properly.  
  68.  
  69. Windows 95 also ships with a patch to improve QuickTime performance.
  70. However, the patch is not automatically installed so you will need to
  71. install it manually.
  72.  
  73. The necessary files can be found on the Win95 CD-ROM in the directory
  74. \drivers\other\qtwfix.
  75.  
  76. The improvement seen after installing this patch will depend on your
  77. particular system configuration. In some cases it is quite dramatic; in
  78. others it is not even noticeable.
  79.  
  80.  
  81. When I try to play a movie, Windows generates a GPF. What is the problem?
  82.  
  83. GPF's and crashes when running QuickTime for Windows, are almost always
  84. caused by bugs in your system's video driver. The first thing to do is
  85. contact your video card manufacturer to get thevery latest video drivers.
  86. These change frequently, so you rarely getthe correct version when you buy
  87. a card, even if you bought it yesterday.
  88.  
  89. I've tried updating my video driver, but I'm stillgetting GPF's. What
  90. other suggestions do you have?
  91.  
  92. Some other causes have been identified under Windows 95. If the MediaPlayer
  93. is not set up correctly, it can cause problems, including GPF's. To correct
  94. this, do Start/Accessories/Media Player. A message willappear if Media
  95. Player is not set up correctly. Choose yes to fix theproblem. Some people
  96. have reported that having the swap file set too small (under 5 MB) can
  97. cause GPF's. To correct this, expand the swap file, although doing so
  98. under Win95 is a risky operation.
  99.  
  100. When I try to play a movie, I get an error message complaining about the
  101. version of "qtmovie.vbx" that is on my system. Now what?
  102.  
  103. This message comes from Visual Basic, which indicates that you are using
  104. a movie player like the GO EDRIVE Movie Viewer. The first thing to check
  105. is that you can play a movie using Apple's Movie Player application, which
  106. comes with QuickTime for Windows. If the movie plays correctly with Movie
  107. Player, then you know QuickTime is working and that the problem lies with
  108. the other application. Next, use the Find command to locate all versions
  109. of qtmovie.vbx on your system. Determine which is the newest, and place
  110. that version into your \windows\system directory. Restart Windows and see
  111. if the problem persists. If it does, then remove any copy of qtmovie.vbx
  112. from \windows\system, and instead place the version that each application
  113. wants in the same directory as the application. This will allow each
  114. application to load its own private copy.
  115.  
  116. After I installed QuickTime for Windows 2.0, when I go to use previously
  117. installed software I get an "invalid dynalink" error. How do I fix it?
  118.  
  119. The "dynalink" error is caused by having mixed versions of QuickTime on
  120. your system. The software gets confused, and when trying to transfer
  121. control from one module to another--which end up being different versions--
  122. it gets a "dynalink" error.  (The "dynalink" error message is a standard
  123. Windows error message--you just won't find it in any common manuals!)
  124. QuickTime 2.0 is upwardly compatible, but you can't have mixed versions
  125. without getting these errors. If you continue to get "dynalink" errors
  126. after installing the 2.1, you probably deleted some QuickTime files which
  127. your CD-ROM needs when you were trying to fix the problem. Reinstall the
  128. CD-ROM and the "dynalinks" should go away. In the future, when you install
  129. a new CD-ROM which contains QuickTime 2.0 or later, do not  let it delete
  130. the older versions of QuickTime found in the other directories, or the
  131. "dynalinks" will return.
  132.  
  133. I have the latest version of QTW, and I don't have mixed versions. What
  134. other causes of "invalid dynalink" errors are there?
  135.  
  136. Under Win95, there are conflicts with some versions of the Ziff-Davis
  137. Benchmarks. You will need to remove those benchmark programs, or check
  138. to see if newer versions have been released which correct the problem.
  139. Under Win95, dynalink errors can occur if the Media Player is not set up
  140. correctly. To correct this, do Start/Accessories/Media Player. A message
  141. will appear if Media Player is not set up correctly. Choose yes to fix
  142. the problem. Also under Win95, dynalink errors can be caused by having
  143. an old MCI driver on the system. Yes, the QuickTime installer is supposed
  144. to take care of this, but apparently it doesn't always do it right.
  145. To correct this problem, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Multimedia.
  146. Click on the Advanced tab, then on Media Control Devices. Click on the
  147. [MCI] QuickTime for Windows, select properties button. Choose Remove or
  148. "Do not use this media...". Restart Windows and re-install QuickTime.
  149.  
  150. Prior to installing this disc, you should confirm that your system meets
  151. the following requirements:
  152.  
  153. 1. Minimum Hardware Requirements:
  154.  
  155. _    A personal computer with an 486 or faster CPU.
  156. _    A CPU speed of 25 MHz or higher.
  157. _    8 megabytes of conventional and extended memory. (may work on some
  158.           systems with only 4MB of RAM)
  159. _    A CD-ROM drive supported by Microsoft Windows (access time less
  160.           than 350ms, and sustained transfer rate of at least 150K/second)
  161. _    A hard disk with at least 4 megabytes free for the basic QuickTime
  162.           for Windows software.
  163. _    Mouse (or other pointing device) supported by Microsoft Windows.
  164. _    A ".WAV" compatible sound card supported by Microsoft Windows.
  165. _    Additional free disk space if you want to keep movies and pictures
  166.           on your hard disk.

  171. Troubleshooting
  172.  
  173. Symptom:
  174.     Program locks up during game play.
  175.  
  176. Possible causes:
  177.     Screen saver, disable screen saver and restart.
  178.     Alternative Desktop (Norton Desktop, etc.), disable and use
  179.             Program Manager.
  180.     Background Process, disable all other programs.
  181.             If you have an IBM Aptiva or PS!, you may experience this.
  182.             To remedy this, refer to the top of this document.
  183.  
  184.  
  185. Symptom:
  186.     "Parity Error" Message
  187.  
  188. Possible causes:
  189.     Memory problem. Check with your computer owner's manual for
  190.             proper machine speed/memory wait-state setting.
  191.  
  192. Symptom:
  193.     "General Protection Fault Error..." message box
  194.  
  195. Possible causes:
  196.     Video or Audio driver conflict. Check with the manufacturer for
  197.             the latest driver. ATI video card owners will experience this.
  198.             Call ATI at (905) 882 - 2600 and ask for the proper settings
  199.             for your card model.
  200.  
  201. Symptom:
  202.     Scrambled Video Display
  203.  
  204. Possible causes:
  205.     Confilict with you Video Display Card.  Edit the file QTW.INI
  206.             in your WINDOWS directory on your hard drive, change the line:
  207.  
  208.     [Video]
  209.     Optimize=Hardware

  211.     to
  212.  
  213.     [Video]
  214.     Optimize=driver
  215.           
  216.             Note: if you are a Packard Bell user, refer to the
  217.                   'Most Asked Technical Questions' portion of this document.
  218.

  220.

  222. We also recommend some type of CD-ROM caching program such as SMARTDRIVE
  223. from DOS 6.2 for better performance during playback.  (SMARTDRIVE form
  224. DOS 6 and earlier does not support CD-ROM caching).
  225.  
  226. To view the movie you should have a 386 or better CPU with 8-bit
  227. (256 color) or better graphics, a sound card, Microsoft Windows 3.1
  228. and DOS 5.0, and a mouse.  Your PC should have at least 4MB of RAM,
  229. and a CD-ROM drive.
  230.  
  231. Systems with only 4MB RAM probably require a permanent swap file of
  232. at least 9996K to obtain satisfactory response time.  This can be
  233. accomplished with Control Panel|386|Virtual Memory.  The virtual memory
  234. manager may claim that Windows will not use any swap file space beyond
  235. what is recommended.  This is not always true.  As a general rule,
  236. you can experiment with swap files from twice to three times the amount
  237. of real RAM.  If you start to experience obviously extended periods of
  238. hard disk access bogging down the system ("thrashing"), the swap file
  239. should be made smaller.  32-bit disk access speeds things up a little.
  240.  
  241. For viewing digital video a 16-bit (32,000) color video adapter is
  242. recommended.  An 8-bit display also looks good.  These QuickTime for
  243. Windows movies have been optimized for 8- and 16-bit video.  An accelerated
  244. graphics card will significantly boost video performance. QuickTime movies
  245. are optimized for 16-bit color so a High Color, 32K, 65K, or 16 million
  246. color graphics card is highly recommended.
  247.  
  248. A "Dynamic Data Link" error is caused by older version of QuickTime
  249. conflicting with the new version. To remedy this problem delete all
  250. QuickTime files from your hard drive and reinstall the software.
  251.  
  252. If you encounter the error "NOT A VALID MOVIE" or you don't see movie
  253. playback just a blank screen (caused by weird configurations) try the
  254. following.
  255.     -Using the file manager run PLAYER.EXE in the Windows directory
  256.            folder on your main drive.
  257.     -With PLAYER.EXE open in the background switch back to your
  258.            desk-top and try running the program again.
  259.  
  260. Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software for
  261. operation of QuickTime for Windows.  If you experience color display
  262. problems or General Protection Fault errors, Please contact your video
  263. board manufacturer to see if newer driver software is available.
  264.  
  265. If the video display is slow, you may not have enough memory.  You can
  266. also try adjusting the colors to 64K colors rather than truecolor (16.7
  267. million).  This results in faster video display and doesn't affect picture
  268. quality.
  269.  
  270.  
  271. MODIFYING QTW.INI FOR COMPATIBILITY
  272. NOTE:  Modification of the QTW.INI file should be done at your own risk.
  273. Typically one does not need to make any modifications to this file.
  274. For some compatibility issues, modifying the file will make video or
  275. audio cards work properly, but with reduced performance. Be sure to
  276. make a backup of the QTW.INI file before modifying it.
  277.  
  278. The most common modification to the QTW.INI is to change the [Video]
  279. setting to Optimize = Driver.  This may resolve severe compatibility
  280. problems with a specific video card but will also reduce the performance
  281. of Movie playback.
  282.  
  283. Once, again modify at your own risk.
  284.

  292. VIDEO PROBLEMS:
  293.  
  294. Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software for 
  295. operation of QuickTime for Windows.  If you experience color display
  296. problems, Please contact your video board manufacturer to see if newer
  297. driver software is available.

  299. If the video display is slow, you may not have enough memory.  You can

  301. (16.7 million).  This results in faster video display and doesn't affect
  302. picture quality.

  305. TIPS
  306. Be sure Windows is using a display driver that will provide 256 colors
  307. (or higher).  This product is not designed for 16-color displays (e.g.,
  308. the standard Windows VGA driver).  If your colors look like kindergarten,
  309. run Windows Setup to install the display driver provided by your video
  310. card manufacturer that supports 256 colors. 
  311.  
  312. Certain high-resolution video cards may require updated driver software
  313. for correct operation of QuickTime for Windows.  Please contact your
  314. video board manufacturer to see if newer driver software is available.
  315.  
  316. Operation will be a little faster, the video window will be physically
  317. largest, and best results are expected, if you use 640x480 resolution
  318. rather than anything higher.  If you operate Digital Playground's
  319. program in 1024x768 resolution, you may find that the "small fonts"
  320. driver works better than the "large fonts" driver (or, less frequently,
  321. vice versa, depending who wrote the drivers).
  322.  
  323. If you have problems reading any of your CD-ROMs check the CD-ROM for
  324. any scratches or finger prints. Use a soft cloth to wipe from the center
  325. to the edge. CD-ROMs are more vulnerable to damage than audio CDs, so
  326. always place them in the jewel box or CD caddies whenever possible.
  327.  
  328. Video play is improved by caching from the CD-ROM drive.  The DOS 6.2
  329. version of Smart Drive includes a CD cache which works well.  To use it,
  330. start smartdrv.exe from your autoexec.bat and include the following line
  331. in your config.sys file:
  332. device=c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /double_buffer
  333. Consult your DOS manual for more information.
  334.  
  335. The program uses a lot of Windows memory and resources.  As it is with
  336. almost any Windows application, not all of these are completely restorable
  337. to the system during and following execution.  Performance is best when
  338. this ZIG product is the first and only program running after starting
  339. Windows.
  340.  
  341. Color conflicts can be caused by your wallpaper.  If the program loads
  342. up in the wrong colors, simply quit, set the wallpaper to [none] in
  343. Windows|Control-Panel|Desktop and run again.
  344.  
  345. HARDWARE NOTES
  346. ATI's "Crystal Fonts" mode is not supported.  Change the Video driver
  347. to a lower resolution.
  348.  
  349. Should you have a problem with a Sony CD-ROM drive (such as the CDU-31A
  350. which ships with many Gateway multimedia systems) which uses the SLCD.SYS
  351. driver, you should get an update from them if you have any version prior
  352. to 1.71A.  Our photo discs (non-video products) work fine with the old
  353. drivers.
  354.  
  355. If memory managers such as QEMM or 386 MAX are used and the program does
  356. not work, sometimes the creation of a system boot disk which loads only
  357. the necessary devices, all loaded low, will fix the problem.
  358.  
  359. If you have a Packard Bell System with a Headland Technology Video Card,
  360. your system's video may look displaced or elongated.  This is because the
  361. Headland Technology drivers are incompatible with QuickTime.  One of two
  362. things can be done:
  363. 1) Call Microsoft and get the Microsoft 640X480 256 color driver and hope
  364.    you have the 1MB video card on your system.  If you have the 512k card
  365.    then this option will not help you.
  366. 2) Get a new video card.  The Headland Technology card, while compatible
  367.    with some video, is not compatible with all.  Cards proven compatible
  368.    such as the Trident, Diamond or Cirrus video cards are rather
  369.    affordable, and provide compatible drivers on included diskettes.
  370.

  373. The video program requires video software drivers and hardware that fully
  374. support Windows 3.1 standards.  The lists below show video systems that
  375. have been tested and found to be compatible with this program.  Installing
  376. the latest available video ROM and software is generally recommended.

  478. Note 1: IBM computers that have the M-Audio sound card should use
  479.         driver version 1.3 or higher for best results. Older versions
  480.         of this driver don't play some sounds in Director or AVI movies.
  481.         The version 1.3 driver does not pass the 16-bit sounds test for
  482.         Director. Testing revealed that 8 bit sounds are corrupted when
  483.         played after a 16-bit sound.  At the time these release notes
  484.         were written, version 1.3 (dated 1/10/94) was the most recent
  485.         driver available from IBM.

  488. PC AUDIO CARD COMPATIBILITY
  489. The following chart summarizes the audio hardware products that were
  490. tested with QuickTime for Windows 1.1.1.  Most compatibility issues are
  491. based on driver versions.  With some boards, more than 1 driver was tested.
  492. In most cases, the latest available driver was tested.  THE DRIVER TESTED
  493. MAY NOT BE THE SAME VERSION AS THAT WHICH CAME WITH THE AUDIO CARD.
  494. Contact the vendor for the latest driver version.  Known bugs are included.

  880. make a backup of the QTW.INI file before modifying it.

  945. An accelerated graphics card will significantly boost video performance.
  946. QuickTime movies are optimized for 16-bit color so a High Color, 32K, 65K,
  947. or 16 million color graphics card is highly recommended.

  949. Make sure your CD-ROM drive is configured properly. If your CD-ROM
  950. controller/host adapter is capable of DMA transfer, always use the
  951. DMA option. Sample "CONFIG.SYS" for Mitsumi CD-ROM drive:

  957. "SETUP.EXE" should have changed your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" to show a path

  962. To optimize playback on your machine, read the QTW.INI file inside your

  965. For optimal performance, use Microsoft CD-ROM driver 2.0 or higher.
  966. Edit your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file to allocate at least 30K drive buffer.

  971. If you use Windows For Workgroup, the installation process will append
  972. a "/s" switch to MSCDEX.EXE. This will cause problem with the viewer
  973. program. Please remove the switch with a text editor and restart the
  974. computer. For more detailed instructions on CD-ROM driver software,
  975. please consult your CD-ROM owner's manuals.

  977. Make sure you are using the most recent versions of HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE,
  978. and SMARTDRV.EXE.  The copies that came with DOS 6.0 are the most recent,
  979. and Windows 3.1 files are better than DOS 5.0 files.  Your config.sys
  980. should have something like the following:

  992. MEMORY PROBLEMS:
  993.  
  994. QuickTime for Windows and Windows 3.1 is very memory hungry.  The best way
  995. to speed-up video quality and display is to have at least 8 MB RAM.  If you
  996. have less, make sure you do not have EMM386 allocating any expanded memory.
  997. Also, you should have SMARTDRV using as little memory as possible (512K
  998. cache).  The biggest performance improvement other than upgrading to a
  999. 486 is to have more memory.
  1000.  
  1001. You can also use the 386 enhanced Virtual Memory settings to create a
  1002. permanent swap file.  This seems to improve performance slightly, but
  1003. more RAM is better.
  1004.

  1006. VIDEO PROBLEMS:
  1007.  
  1008. Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software for 
  1009. operation of QuickTime for Windows.  If you experience color display
  1010. problems, Please contact your video board manufacturer to see if newer
  1011. driver software is available.
  1012.  
  1013. If the video display is slow, you may not have enough memory.  You can
  1014. also try adjusting the colors to 64K colors rather than truecolor
  1015. (16.7 million).  This results in faster video display and doesn't
  1016. affect picture quality.
  1017.  
  1018.  
  1019. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  1020.  
  1021. As with any product, you may need to tweak your system to get optimal
  1022. performance. The most important considerations are improper configuration
  1023. of EMM386 giving too much Expanded memory (Windows doesn't need any,
  1024. but DOS apps do), and simply not enough memory.  If you are running
  1025. Windows with 4 MB RAM, you will see a REAL performance boost by
  1026. upgrading.

  1028. EVEN MORE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  1030. If you don't see movie playback just a blank screen (caused by weird
  1031. configurations) try the following.
  1032.     -Run PLAYER.EXE in the Digital Playground Program Group.
  1033.     -With PLAYER.EXE open in the background switch back to your
  1034.          desk-top and try running the program again.
